THE ROLE
The Cloud Operations team delivers 24×7×365 support for all Syniti SaaS and Hosting customers worldwide. The team is responsible for ensuring the uptime, performance, and high availability of customer workloads across multi-tiered applications, microservice architectures, and a diverse portfolio of managed database systems - including Aurora PostgreSQL Serverless v2, RDS SQL Server Enterprise, ElastiCache Redis, DynamoDB, Amazon OpenSearch, and Amazon Athena.
The SRE Database Specialist is responsible for enterprise database design, tuning, high availability, and disaster recovery across a heterogeneous, AWS-managed database environment. The role encompasses multiple Aurora PostgreSQL Serverless v2 clusters, RDS SQL Server Enterprise instances, ElastiCache Redis replication groups, DynamoDB tables, and Amazon OpenSearch domains deployed in both AWS GovCloud and Commercial regions. The environment spans development, pre-production, and production tiers with an emphasis on continued modernization and automation.
The primary objective is to minimize operational toil through automated solutions - leveraging Terraform, Python, and GitHub Actions - for day-to-day maintenance, upkeep, and operations control. This allows the engineer to concentrate on improving platform performance, designing new database architectures within the SaaS ecosystem, and maintaining compliance across all data stores.
The ideal candidate combines the depth of a principal database administrator with the development capabilities of a junior-to-mid-level software engineer.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
· Lead database design and performance tuning for Aurora PostgreSQL Serverless v2 clusters and RDS SQL Server Enterprise instances
· Manage backup, restore, and disaster-recovery strategies - including automated snapshots, point-in-time recovery, multi-AZ failover, and RDS Proxy
· Design and implement proactive maintenance strategies using RDS Performance Insights, Enhanced Monitoring, and CloudWatch Logs to ensure optimal database health and performance
· Build and extend database automation using Terraform (AWS, PostgreSQL, and MSSQL providers), Python Lambda functions, and GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines
· Develop self-healing automation and credential-rotation workflows (AWS Secrets Manager, Lambda-based MSSQL rotation) to reduce manual intervention
· Serve as the technical lead for database workstreams on customer rollouts and strategic projects within AWS GovCloud environments
· Mentor junior DBAs, technical support staff, and application developers on effective use of the database platform
WHAT IT TAKES
· Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-demand cloud operations environment with shifting priorities
· Strong analytical acumen and a solutions-oriented mindset for navigating complex technical and business challenges
· Demonstrated customer-service orientation with a focus on reliability and responsiveness
· Excellent communication skills and a track record of driving cross-departmental initiatives to meet organizational objectives and customer needs
· Strong presentation, business writing, and technical documentation skills
· Proven ability to build and maintain productive relationships with internal teams, customers, and external partners
· Genuine interest in applying technology to create measurable business value and improve operational workflows
· Awareness of emerging regulations, industry best practices, and technology trends relevant to cloud database operations
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills in German and English
· Be fully aligned with our core values:
Think Big - Be courageous and bold. Aspire to greatness. Relentlessly pursue market innovation. Set the standard by which others follow. Create solutions that have a meaningful impact. Solve the challenges our customers don’t know they have.
Be Curious - Be a lifelong learner. Seek out new ideas to serve customers. Understand our competition and the world. Be permanently dissatisfied with the status quo. Challenge preconceptions. Focus on the future rather than yesterday.
