About The Role
The Technical Writer role at Bowhead / UIC Technical Services is a critical position supporting the company's engineering and technical operations at the Crane, IN facility. The successful candidate will perform complex engineering support assignments related to undersea sensor systems, military platforms, and both military and commercial systems integration. This position involves preparing and updating technical manuals, engineering change proposals, and system documentation, ensuring accuracy and clarity for technical teams and end-users. The role requires a detail-oriented professional capable of working independently on non-standardized tasks, extracting and compiling engineering data, and assisting in design modifications. The Technical Writer will collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure comprehensive documentation and compliance with project specifications.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in engineering, technical communication, or a related field is required. Candidates should possess between two (2) to five (5+) years of relevant experience, preferably supporting operations at NSWC Crane or similar defense facilities. Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite—Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint—is essential. The ideal candidate will demonstrate effective communication skills across all organizational levels, strong interpersonal abilities, and sound judgment. Physical capability to lift 15 to 25 pounds, stand, walk, and perform periodic bending or squatting is necessary. Candidates must be able to obtain a security clearance at the Secret level; those with an active Secret clearance are preferred. U.S. citizenship is a mandatory requirement for obtaining the Secret clearance at this location.
Responsibilities
The Technical Writer will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Following detailed layouts, procedures, drawings, and scientific diagrams to update technical manuals and engineering change proposals (ECPs).
Extracting, compiling, and analyzing engineering data from field notes, manuals, lab reports, and processing data to identify errors, inconsistencies, or gaps.
Assisting in design modifications by gathering data related to design specifications, materials, and operational failures, using judgment to recognize and address discrepancies.
Writing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to hazard analysis and system validation/verification events.
Maintaining detailed records of system analysis, prototyping, design, preproduction, and fabrication activities.
Participating in validation and verification events, ensuring documentation accuracy and completeness.
Supporting undersea sensor system activities, including system analysis, modifications, and technical documentation.
Performing other duties as assigned to support project and organizational objectives.
