Job description
At TC Energy, we are proud to connect the world to the energy it needs. Guided by our values of safety in every step, personal accountability, one team and active learning , we deliver the critical energy that North America and the world rely on while balancing reliability, affordability and sustainability. Join us. Connect to what matters. The Opportunity Are you an early-career engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and wants to build deep expertise in industrial automation and control systems? TC Energy's Automation Operations Engineering team within Canada Operations Technical Support is seeking an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to support the industrial control systems that enable the safe and reliable operation of our Canada Gas assets. This is a technically focused role where you'll work alongside experienced automation engineers, field specialists, technicians, and other engineering disciplines to solve real operational problems. You’ll gain hands-on experience across industrial control systems and the broader Operational Technology (OT) environment, including PLCs, HMI/SCADA, industrial networks, instrumentation, cybersecurity, and data systems supporting compressor and measurement facilities. We're looking for someone with strong engineering fundamentals, technical curiosity, logical troubleshooting skills, and the drive to develop deep expertise in automation and controls. As your experience grows, you'll take on increasingly complex engineering work involving control system troubleshooting, programming, system design, reliability analysis, risk assessment, cybersecurity, and lifecycle improvements. If you enjoy understanding how and why systems work, digging into difficult technical problems, and continually expanding your engineering knowledge, we want to hear from you. What you’ll do Work with engineers, field specialists, and technicians to diagnose and resolve PLC, HMI, instrumentation, communications, and control system issues affecting operating facilities. Build technical expertise in Operational Technology (OT), working across the intersection of industrial automation, instrumentation, networking, cybersecurity, computing infrastructure, and physical equipment. Participate in a rotational on-call program, approximately one week in eight, supporting after-hours control system issues as your knowledge and experience develop. Analyze asset and operational data to identify recurring failures, reliability concerns, and opportunities to improve system performance and availability. Develop, test, and implement automation software changes in accordance with established engineering, testing, and Management of Change requirements. Participate in control system testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and root-cause investigations. Troubleshoot secure network communications and resolve data transmission issues between field and data center systems. Support automation-related risk assessments and identify control system reliability and lifecycle risks. Support the development of technical scopes for control system upgrades and facility improvement projects. Develop scripts, tools, and automated solutions that improve engineering, maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting activities. Apply engineering principles to problems involving automation, instrumentation, industrial communications, computing systems, and rotating equipment controls. Take increasing ownership of engineering activities as your technical capabilities and experience develop. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer or Software Engineering, or related engineering discipline. Must be registered or eligible for registration with APEGA as an Engineer-in-Training. 1 to 4 years of relevant engineering experience, including applicable internship or co-op experience. Strong engineering fundamentals with a demonstrated interest in automation, controls, instrumentation, programming, or Operational Technology (OT). Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to approach unfamiliar technical problems logically and systematically. Ability and willingness to learn from experienced engineers, specialists, technicians, and other subject-matter experts. Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment. Self-motivated and comfortable taking initiative while recognizing when to seek guidance or technical support. Preferred Qualifications We’re looking for strong technical aptitude and learning ability rather than experience with every technology listed below. Exposure to one or more through work experience, co-op or internship placements, university projects, laboratories, or technical design teams would be considered an asset. Experience working with control system deliverables including control narratives, cause-and-effect logic, control panel designs and system testing. Experience with PLC or industrial control system programming, particularly platforms such as Rockwell ControlLogix, Emerson ControlWave Micro, or Emerson Rx3i. Experience with HMI, SCADA, or industrial data systems such as AVEVA System Platform (Wonderware) or AVEVA PI System. Knowledge of industrial cybersecurity standards and design principles. Experience troubleshooting industrial networks, including firewalls and switches. Programming or scripting using Python, PowerShell, C/C++, or similar languages. Exposure to industrial instrumentation, sensors, electrical systems, compressors, gas turbines, or other rotating equipment. To remain competitive, support our high-performance culture and allow for more flexibility in the way we work, we offer a hybrid work model and flexible dress code for our eligible office-based workforce in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. #LI-Hybrid About our business We are a leader in North American energy infrastructure, spanning Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
