Job description

About Tutor We believe robots should be the next chapter in making physical labor safer and more affordable. But, nearly nine out of ten American factories and warehouses don’t have a single robot. Tutor Intelligence is changing that. We build robots that go straight into real factories and warehouses, to do real work, with real impact. Our robot Cassie does back-breaking work, moving boxes, pallets, and bulk goods for family-owned manufacturers to some of the largest brands in the world. Our robot Sonny does handwork, using two arms to achieve human-like dexterity in picking and packing. Every robot learns on the job, and each one we deploy makes the next one more capable, more affordable, and faster to put to work. Founded at MIT and headquartered in Watertown, MA, we do it all in-house: the robotics hardware, the machine learning, and the field deployment and service. We’re a team of researchers, engineers, technicians, operators, and sellers who love building things and solving hard problems. Our mission is grand: robots everywhere, for the common good, raising the standard of living across North America, and then the world. Why Tutor? Whether you’re designing robots, closing deals, running deployments, or creating the processes that help us scale, your work doesn’t sit on a shelf. It shows up on real production floors, making physical work safer and more affordable. Our team of 160+ is driven by curiosity and a genuine love of building. Everyone here takes real ownership, learns fast, and holds a high bar while having each other’s backs. If you love hard problems and creating things that didn’t exist before, you’ll fit right in. The Role Tutor is hiring a Head of Fleet and Data to own our robots after they ship: the team that supports them in customers' facilities, the tools that team uses, and the engineering that turns what the fleet sees into a better product. The job, at its core, is to take work that needs a trained person today and make most of it unnecessary. The team includes the people who support robots in the field day to day, the engineers who build their tools, and the engineers who take on the hard problems from the field. The team writes code, works on hardware investigations, and talks to customers directly. You report to the CTO. Problems on the list A robot that runs clean all morning and fails at the same hour every afternoon. Nothing in the logs explains it. Someone has to decide what to measure, write the instrumentation, get it onto that robot, and read the answer. A customer switches packaging and perception starts missing. The fleet data showed it two days before they called. The tool that would have flagged it does not exist yet. A task that took a trained person every time last quarter. This quarter it takes software, and the person is working on something harder. A failure that is hardware, not software, and the proof is a pressure trace and a worn part. The fix touches a supplier, a procedure, and every robot in the field. What You'll Do Run the team: Hire and manage engineers across software and hardware, and the field support team, with a real career path for both Own the tools: The software the support team uses to see, decide and act, and the data it produces Fix the fleet: Lead investigations into field failures, add instrumentation where the data is missing, ship fixes, and work with product teams on the fixes that belong on their roadmap Make the robots need less help: Measure how often a robot needs a person, and drive that number down Face customers: Be the engineering voice a customer hears when something is wrong, and the one who tells them what changed What We're Looking For You have managed engineers, and you have managed people who are not engineers, and you treated both as real teams You have built tools for operators and watched them use them You have shipped software to systems that were running in the field at the time You are comfortable in a conversation with a customer whose equipment is down You think in systems: when something breaks twice, you change the thing that let it break Nice to Have Remote operation, teleoperation, or human-in-the-loop systems for robots or vehicles Running a support or operations team and automating its work Robotics or other hardware deployed in customers' facilities Hardware debugging alongside the software Benefits Fully employer-covered health insurance , so you’re protected without the premium. A managed 401(k) to help you plan for the future. Generous time off: unlimited PTO and all federal holidays off for full-time salaried employees, and 16+ days of accrued paid time off plus 1.5x pay on federal holidays for hourly employees. Regular in-office meals and team social events throughout the year. To apply Along with a résumé, tell us about a manual process you made unnecessary: what it was, what you built, and what the people doing it worked on afterward. About Our Roles & Titles Everyone in our R&D organization, including the people who lead it, holds the title Member of Technical Staff (MoTS). Our job postings use standard titles so you can find us. If you join Tutor, you'll be a MoTS who runs fleet and data. Head of Fleet and Data is how you'll be known outside the company, because building the team means being legible to the people you're recruiting. In an ideal world everyone here would simply be a MoTS; external titles exist only where the outside world needs them. Compensation The base salary range for this role is $175,000 to $300,000, depending on experience. As Tutor grows, so will our benefits. We’re continuing to invest in ways to support our team at work and beyond. Tutor Intelligence is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds.
