We are seeking an exceptional Health, Safety & Wellbeing Director, Major Projects to lead the HSW function across the portfolio and strengthen how health and safety risk is governed and managed throughout the project lifecycle. This is an opportunity to shape a consistent, scalable and high-performing HSW operating model, influence major project decisions and help create a lasting safety legacy across Australia's energy network. The opportunity Reporting to the General Manager Operations & Safety, Major Projects, you will lead the Health, Safety and Wellbeing function across Major Projects, with direct leadership of Project Health & Safety Managers and associated team members. You will develop and implement the Major Projects Health, Safety and Wellbeing Plan, aligned with the Transgrid Network HSW Strategy, Safety Management System and enterprise risk framework. You will establish portfolio-wide governance, assurance, reporting, contractor management and critical risk arrangements that support both safe outcomes and successful project delivery. Working closely with Program Directors and project leadership teams, you will embed HSW requirements into project governance, planning, design, procurement, mobilisation, construction delivery and operational readiness. As a key leader in Transgrid's Active Client delivery model, you will set clear expectations and provide confidence in contractor performance, regulatory compliance and the effectiveness of critical controls. What you'll do Develop and implement the Major Projects Health, Safety and Wellbeing Plan and associated portfolio-wide initiatives. Establish a consistent and scalable HSW operating model across multiple programs and projects. Develop Major Projects operational processes, tools and guidance that align with and integrate into the Transgrid Safety Management System and corporate HSW framework. Lead risk-based assurance, audit, review and verification programs, including oversight and reporting of Line 1, independent assurance and critical control verification activities. Embed HSW requirements across project development, design, procurement, tendering, mobilisation, construction, commissioning and operational readiness. Lead contractor and delivery partner safety governance across EPC, alliance and collaborative delivery environments. Provide executive oversight of significant incidents, high-potential events, investigations, emerging risks and regulator engagement. Integrate psychological safety, psychosocial risk management, mental health and worker wellbeing into project delivery. Build, coach and develop a high-performing Health & Safety team and strengthen safety leadership capability across Major Projects. Represent Major Projects with regulators, government agencies, contractors, consultants and industry bodies. Who you are You are a strategic and influential HSW leader with the judgement, presence and technical depth to operate in complex, high-risk project environments. You understand how to balance safety, delivery, schedule and commercial considerations through effective risk-based decision making, without compromising safe outcomes. You build trust with executives, Program Directors, contractors, regulators and frontline teams. You create clarity, strengthen accountability and foster an environment where people feel safe to raise concerns, challenge assumptions, escalate risks and contribute ideas. You'll bring A degree qualification in Work Health & Safety, Engineering, Risk Management, Psychology, Human Factors or a related discipline; postgraduate qualifications are desirable. Extensive senior HSW leadership experience within major infrastructure, utilities, energy, construction or another high-risk project delivery environment. Demonstrated experience leading HSW functions across large-scale, contractor-delivered capital programs and projects. Proven success implementing standardised HSW systems, governance frameworks, assurance programs and reporting across complex portfolios. Deep expertise in critical risk management, assurance, verification and contractor oversight. Strong understanding of contractor-led delivery models, including EPC, alliance and collaborative contracting arrangements. Experience leading serious incident response, investigations and regulator engagement. Strong knowledge of psychosocial risk management, psychological safety, worker wellbeing and Australian HSW legislation. A current driver licence and the ability to travel to project locations and Transgrid sites as required.
