HV Engineer

As NEXTDC continues to expand its high voltage (HV) infrastructure, we are looking for an experienced HV Engineer to provide national technical leadership across our growing HV network. This is a specialist role responsible for ensuring our HV operating framework, regulatory compliance and operational risk position continue to evolve as our infrastructure moves from utility intake through to 66kV supply, internal 22/33kV distribution, RMUs and multiple transformation stages to LV. Based in Sydney, you will work nationally across NEXTDC’s existing and future HV sites, providing technical expertise, operational governance and design assurance rather than owning a single site’s HV footprint. To be successful in this role you’ll have: What you’ll do Own and maintain NEXTDC’s HV operating policy across the full voltage hierarchy, including 66kV switch rooms, 22/33kV distribution, RMUs, transformers, GIS, protection systems, isolation and earthing, switching and emergency response. Ensure HV systems, substations, transformers and associated equipment remain compliant with AS/NZS standards, state and territory electrical safety legislation and network operator requirements. Develop and maintain HV switching programs, protection coordination studies, relay settings registers and RMU operating procedures across NEXTDC facilities. Maintain strong relationships with network operators and utility stakeholders, including Ausgrid and Jemena, across connection agreements, protection interfaces and network requirements. Provide specialist technical review of new HV infrastructure, including incoming 66kV switch rooms, transformer sizing, busbar protection and substation layouts, identifying potential design deficiencies before construction. Provide SME support across HV testing, commissioning, maintenance, capital projects and fault/emergency response. Work across state and federal regulatory requirements to ensure a consistent and robust HV operating framework across NEXTDC’s national portfolio. 8+ years’ experience working with HV electrical systems within a mission-critical, utility, power generation, large industrial or hyperscale data centre environment. Deep technical knowledge of HV distribution systems, including substations, transformers, GIS, RMUs, protection systems and associated control systems across 66kV and 22/33kV networks. Relevant HV authorisations and electrical licences. Strong knowledge of AS/NZS electrical standards, electrical safety legislation and network operator requirements. Demonstrated experience developing HV operating policies, switching procedures and operational frameworks. Strong design-review capability, with the ability to identify technical and operational risks before new infrastructure is constructed. Experience with protection coordination studies and relay settings management. Experience engaging with utilities, network operators and regulators on HV connection, protection and network interface requirements. The ability to lead or provide technical direction across HV testing, commissioning, maintenance and fault response.
