Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use. Role Purpose Job is with OCS Division Engineering APAC Regional Engineering based in Asia to support all Optical Commercial Solutions (OCS) plants. Project assignment may involve travel percentage from 25~50% between Taiwan, China, North America, and Europe. Building strong technical linkage with Division Engineering groups in North America, and Europe and leading vendors responsible for building manufacturing process equipment/systems for Corning Incorporated. Key Responsibilities • Provide engineering analysis expertise to project teams responsible for delivering robust, cost-effective equipment, automation, and machine systems to Corning’s manufacturing plants and processes on time. • Lead and work with APAC project team members to track and resolve automation system- and equipment-related issues, while developing a basic understanding of process requirements. • Define and document equipment design specifications; develop equipment design concepts; design and oversee the construction of prototype and production equipment; conduct proof-of-concept tests; collect and evaluate data; and make engineering recommendations. • Interface with external machine builders, system integrators, and suppliers to specify and successfully deliver fully integrated equipment systems to internal customers on time, within budget, and in accordance with process performance requirements. • Actively participate in system integration, checkout, installation, debugging, production start-up, and plant personnel training. • Report project activities on a predetermined basis and ensure that results meet customer requirements and standards. • Travel occasionally to Corning plants and vendor locations to support process development for new products, new operations, and process improvement projects. • Be capable of executing project assignments independently with minimal supervision. Experiences & Education • 5+ years of project leadership experience • 5–8+ years of experience in an engineering function, with a Bachelor’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or a related discipline • 5+ years of international project experience involving new product development, automation equipment development, prototyping, debugging, and optimization • 3+ years of experience in the cable assembly or optical communications industry Required Skills • Good understanding of mechanical design and proficiency in using mechanical design tools • Detail-oriented and able to work effectively with limited supervision • Effective oral and written communication skills in English, with a focus on quality • Proactive, independent, flexible, and a quick learner • Excellent computer skills, including proficient use of Microsoft Office • Customer-oriented, with the ability to meet both internal and external customer needs with high-quality results • Results-oriented, with strong self-management skills • Ability to build effective working relationships with others • Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks effectively • Ability to contribute to the development of others • Accountable for the accuracy of work performed and proactive in ensuring work quality Desired Skills • 5–8+ years of experience in mechanical/equipment design and engineering analysis, with proficiency in solid modeling tools such as SolidWorks, Pro/E, and Inventor • 3+ years of experience in fixture and tooling design is preferred • 3+ years of CAD/CAM experience, particularly for CNC applications, is preferred • Familiar with industrial safety standards • Familiar with the application and selection of commercial standard parts, including mechanical and sensing components • Familiar with GD&T, pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical components • Familiar with setup reduction, poka-yoke, continuous flow, and other lean manufacturing concepts • Familiar with manufacturing processes including milling, turning, grinding, and sheet metal fabrication • Understanding of both automated and manual process development Soft Skills • Self-starter, able to achieve objectives and meet timelines with minimal supervision • Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment and contribute to matrix project teams • Results-oriented, with a high level of commitment • Knowledge of Six Sigma methodologies or project management is preferred Corning is committed to providing equal employment opportunities and considers requests for reasonable accommodations in accordance with applicable laws.
