Job description

Join Our Multidisciplinary Team at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore These cluster hires will contribute to an integrated programme spanning fault assessment, seismic and geodetic monitoring, earthquake physics, ground-motion modelling, site response, exposure and vulnerability, and probabilistic seismic hazard and risk assessment, working to strengthen Singapore’s national capabilities. New hires will join a multidisciplinary research team spanning Nanyang Technological University’s Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), Asian School of the Environment (ASE), and School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE). For more information, please visit: https://earthobservatory.sg , https://ntu.edu.sg/ase , and https://ntu.edu.sg/cee . We are looking to fill a total of 4 Research Associate / Research Engineer II positions: (1&2) Research Associate (Paleoseismology & Neotectonics) We are looking for a Research Associate to provide senior field and analytical support for paleoseismic trench investigations. The role will focus on mapping potentially active faults, trench-wall logging, stratigraphic and structural interpretation, sample collection and processing, sedimentological analysis, and integration of field and laboratory results under the direction of the lead trenching scientist. Key Responsibilities: Analyse existing geological data and digital terrain models to refine fault locations ahead of trenching Collaborate with in-house experts in geophysical and CPT techniques to conduct preliminary surveys of candidate trench sites Lead documentation and interpretation of trench-wall exposures under the direction of the Research Fellow Recognise and record key stratigraphic and structural relationships in the field, including evidence for past surface rupture Support trench-log compilation, drafting, and integration of paired wall logs Support sample collection, processing, and preparation of materials for geochronological and sedimentological analysis Assist with integration of dating results and contribute to site interpretation Contribute to the preparation of site reports and technical documentation Guide and check the work of Research Assistants during logging, sampling, and field documentation Support wall preparation, gridding, surveying, and site logistics during trenching Job Requirements: Master’s degree in geology, geoscience, Earth science, geotechnical engineering, or a related field At least 1 full year of paleoseismic trenching experience (experience gained during Master’s research may be counted towards this requirement) Demonstrated experience with sedimentology, structural geology, tectonic geomorphology, and Quaternary mapping, or comparable work Ability to recognize and document stratigraphic and structural relationships in the field Proficiency with relevant mapping, drafting, GIS, and structure-from-motion software Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical reports for review by external experts Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team under demanding field conditions and strict timelines Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with meticulous attention to field documentation Willingness and ability to perform demanding physical fieldwork, including extended periods in trenches in warm tropical regions, and to travel for fieldwork in the region. Entry-level candidates are welcome to apply where they can demonstrate the required technical background and relevant experience (3) Research Associate (Fault-Zone Analysis in Bedrock) We are looking for a Research Associate to support a multidisciplinary geoscience research programme focused on the characterization of geological materials and the investigation of fault-zone processes in the subsurface, with the end goal of assessing fault behaviour and geological evidence of past deformation. The role will contribute to sample characterization; laboratory investigations including geochemical, mineralogical, microstructural, geomechanical, and/or geochronological testing; and integrating the results into fault-zone interpretation. Key Responsibilities: Conduct routine geological logging, sample screening, and preliminary characterization of rock materials Support inventory, prioritisation, preparation, scanning, and digital archiving of priority bedrock cores Assist in identifying and selecting core intervals for follow-up detailed analysis Prepare samples of fault-zone materials and fractured bedrock for geochemical, mineralogical, microstructural, geomechanical, and geochronological testing, and support laboratory analyses Coordinate logistics related to sample handling, transportation, storage, and laboratory activities Support structural and mineralogical interpretation of faulted and fractured core intervals Assist with data collection, quality control, processing, visualization, and management of scientific datasets Maintain research databases, metadata records, and project documentation Support preparation of technical reports, conference abstracts, presentations, and scientific manuscripts Work closely with research staff, collaborators, and laboratory personnel to ensure timely delivery of project objectives Job Requirements: Master’s degree in geology, geoscience, Earth science, geological engineering, or a related field is required; a Master’s thesis focused on petrology, mineral characterization, geochemistry, geochronology, structural geology, or related geoscience topics would be advantageous Experience in geochronological, geochemical, mineralogical, microstructural, or geomechanical laboratory work, and/or familiarity with identifying minerals suitable for geochemical or geochronological investigations Academic background in petrology, mineralogy, geochemistry, geochronology, structural geology, or closely related fields would be advantageous Experience with scientific data management and analysis is required; experience with core handling, sample preparation, scanning, laboratory workflows, or geological data management would be advantageous Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical reports for review by external experts Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary collaborative team, and to manage multiple concurrent laboratory workflows Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with meticulous attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate sample and data records Entry-level candidates are welcome to apply where they can demonstrate the required technical background and relevant experience (4) Research Engineer II (Seismology) We are looking for a Research Engineer II to join a multidisciplinary team of seismologists and engineers working on AI-assisted earthquake monitoring and seismic data processing. The role will focus on developing an operational software package by integrating, optimizing, and validating existing workflows for routine seismic data processing. Beyond software development, the candidate will have opportunities to contribute to advanced AI algorithms and intelligent systems for agentic earthquake detection, processing, early warning, and interpretation. Key Responsibilities: Integrate and optimize existing seismic data-processing workflows into robust operational software Test, validate, document, and maintain software packages for research and operational applications Contribute to the development of AI-assisted workflows for agentic earthquake monitoring, detection, warning, and interpretation Publish high-impact research outcomes in leading international journals or conferences Support student mentoring and technical training Job Requirements: Master’s degree in computer science, data science, machine learning, engineering, geophysics, or related field Strong programming skills in Python and at least one compiled language, such as C, C++, or Fortran Experience in scientific software development, data processing, workflow integration, or system deployment Familiarity with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and AI-assisted coding tools is preferred Experience with seismic data, signal processing, scientific computing, or operational monitoring systems would be advantageous Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills Interested candidates should submit the following documents: A current curriculum vitae (CV) A succinct cover letter (not more than one page) detailing research interests and relevant experience The name and contact information for 2–3 references; institutional e-mail addresses are preferred, but other addresses will be accepted with suitable explanation If the candidate has relevant publications, they may include web links (URLs) in the CV or as an annex to the cover letter (this will not count toward the one-page limit) We seek a diverse and inclusive workforce and are committed to equality of opportunity.
