Job description
Who We Are AngloGold Ashanti is a global gold mining company with a diverse, high-quality portfolio of operations, projects and exploration activities across 10 countries on four continents. We pursue value-creating opportunities involving other minerals, where we can leverage our existing assets, shareholdings, skills and experience. At AngloGold Ashanti, we assure you of work that carries significance and creates tangible results. What we do goes beyond mining. We build livelihoods in communities, champion environmental stewardship, and strengthen local and national economies. Our leaders and teams are committed to listening to and supporting each other, valuing differences, and embracing equity. We are convinced that greatness only happens when we prioritize these behaviors and the well-being of every person. Learn more about our Vision, purpose, values - AngloGold Ashanti Senior Geotechnical Specialist – Open Pit Mining (Africa) Role Overview Open pit walls have to stand, and when they do, people and production stay safe. As our Senior Geotechnical Specialist for open pit mining, you will be the trusted adviser to our African mines on rock and soil behaviour, water and slope risk. You will spend real time with site teams, building their skills and helping them solve slope stability challenges at the source. If you like being hands-on, mentoring others and seeing your work protect people and production, this role is for you. You will join a regional team that works across several countries and operations, so your impact will reach well beyond a single mine. A typical year might mix design reviews in Johannesburg, weeks embedded with a site team, and audits that lead to clear action plans. Every deployment is a chance to leave a team more capable than you found it. Key Responsibilities Carry out and review open pit geotechnical designs and give practical advice to site teams on rock and soil mechanics, hydrology and hydrogeology. Set up and enforce Group systems for collecting, storing and checking geotechnical data, including Power BI reporting. Support technical audits and reviews and help sites build clear action plans to fix data gaps or model differences. Work as a seconded member of site teams for extended periods to build skills and improve compliance. Provide the geotechnical inputs that short- and medium-term mine plans need to keep ground control effective. Train site personnel on geotechnical data systems and risk management practices. Work with drill and blast teams to reduce wall damage. Coach and develop junior engineers so site capability grows over time. Use your field experience to turn audit findings into practical steps that site teams can follow. Help sites measure how well slope control is working and agree on clear next steps. Required Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in geology, mining, geotechnical engineering, civil engineering or a related field. A postgraduate qualification is highly desirable. 8 years of on-site experience in open pit mining, in both deep saprolite and hard rock slopes. Experience with quality control, risk management and data collection in an operating mine. Has written ground control management plans and trigger action response plans. Extensive experience with slope monitoring systems such as slope stability radar, prisms and satellite radar (InSAR). Experience improving drilling and blasting to limit wall damage. Willingness to travel extensively. Skills and Competencies Strong knowledge of slope design, rock and soil mechanics and slope risk. Skill with monitoring systems, geotechnical data tools and reporting, including Power BI. A track record of coaching and developing junior engineers. Clear communication that works equally well in the pit and the boardroom. Practical problem-solving and the confidence to give advice to experienced site teams. Flexibility and resilience to work across different sites and cultures. The ability to explain technical risk in plain language to supervisors, engineers and managers. Work Environment and Expectations Based in Johannesburg, with regular travel to mine sites across Africa. You must be willing to travel extensively. Mine sites are safety-sensitive environments. You will lead by example on safety and follow site rules at all times. This is a permanent role with no direct reports, although you will coach site personnel and junior engineers. Benefits Summary AngloGold Ashanti offers a comprehensive and competitive benefits package designed to support employees’ health, financial security, and overall well-being. Medical insurance, employee assistance programmes, and wellbeing initiatives. Company-supported pension or provident fund contributions. Annual leave, sick leave, and public holidays in line with company policy.
