Salary range: $90,000.00-$104,348.00 Posting expires: 10/19/2026 General Description and Classification Standards: The Airport Server Engineer provides hands-on technical support and subject-matter expertise for the City of Atlanta’s email messaging infrastructure, including Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft Teams, Office 365, the Proofpoint mail gateway, SMTP relay systems, and related protocols. The role involves designing and supporting messaging solutions, establishing standards and policies, resolving complex technical issues, and helping introduce new capabilities across the enterprise messaging environment. Supervision Received: This is a fully seasoned professional level (senior level) capable of carrying out most assignments typical of the profession with limited guidance or review. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. · Provide hands-on administration and support for messaging systems with knowledge of Microsoft Entra for Azure Active Directory including MS Exchange Server, Office 365 suite, Microsoft Teams, Proofpoint filtering and SMTP relays. · Integrate Microsoft technologies with Active Directory, MFA, and on-premises networks. · Installs, integrates, and maintains, the security system and supports new and existing corporate Widows Server. · Support high-availability and disaster recovery configurations for Microsoft services. · Diagnose and resolve mail routing issues, Office 365 problems, and online meeting failures. · Manage server security vulnerability remediation. · Oversee both on-premises datacenter virtual and physical servers and within various cloud platforms. · Manages single resource and multi-resource internal team projects. · Designs, plans and manages deployment of new and multi-specialty technologies. · Plans, designs and implements an Active Directory migration. · Monitors and administers appropriate systems to ensure systems and services availability, peak performance, and modifications to existing environments are effective and efficient. · Documents of all systems procedures, systems practices, job responsibilities and job processes. · Administers and provides technical support for various system and network software packages including electronic mail, databases, file services, print services, anti-virus, backup, monitoring, etc. · Configures backup solutions to protect data and applications and tests the restore process to ensure data can be recovered in case of a failure. · Implements enhancements to servers to improve performance and reliability. · Develops a disaster recovery plan. · Makes purchasing or resource allocation decisions within organization guidelines as required. · Recommends, schedules, and performs software and hardware improvements, upgrades, patches, reconfigurations, and/or purchases. · Apply organizational policies; interpret organizational policies and recommend exceptions as needed. · Establishes work methods, timetables, performance standards, etc. · Provides work group leadership, guidance, and/or training to less experienced staff. · Serves as a technical resource or mentor to other team members. · May perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience – 1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering (Additional years of experience may be considered as a substitute for the required degree on an exceptional basis, with a minimum of nine (9) years of professional related experience); and 2. five (5) years of specific virtual server experience. Licensures and Certifications – 1. Preferred certifications (not required): MCSA, MCSE, MCTS, MCITP for Exchange, Teams, or Office 365. 2. Strong understanding of ITIL concepts (certification preferred but not required). 3. Advanced degree is a plus. Preferred Requirements – Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Engineering (equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the degree on an exception basis) with five (5) – eight (8) years of experience that is directly related professional work.
