Underground Geology Intern

Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company’s portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations. The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area. Job Summary The position is intended to provide a university student studying geology with practical work experience in underground mining while assisting the geology team with routine operational geology duties and special projects. The intern will gain exposure to underground development, production, grade control, geological data collection, and core or chip logging while consistently demonstrating Kinross values. Essential Functions 1. Assists underground geologists with development heading mapping, face and back mapping, geological interpretation, and underground grade control activities. 2. Assists with underground mapping and sampling programs, including face, rib, back, muck, channel, and development sampling as assigned. 3. Supports collection and documentation of structural, geotechnical, groundwater, and ground-condition observations encountered in underground headings and excavations. 4. Assists with underground diamond, reverse-circulation, long hole, or other drilling programs through drill monitoring, core or chip handling, recovery measurements, orientation checks, sampling, and documentation as assigned. 5. Assist underground geologists with special projects such as stope reconciliation, dilution and ore-loss reviews, muck movement tracking, cavity monitoring data review, paste or backfill sampling support, and underground water-quality sampling. 6. Performs sample preparation, labeling, chain-of-custody documentation, quality-assurance and quality-control checks, cataloging, and secure storage tasks. 7. Works collaboratively with geology, mine operations, engineering, survey, and technical services personnel to complete assigned duties and communicate geological observations. 8. Collects accurate geological data underground using approved field tools and digital capture methods, and transfers observations into geological databases or mapping systems. 9. Assists with core logging, photographing, marking, cutting, sampling, and maintaining organized core and sample records. 10. Supports daily ore-control communication by identifying lithologic contacts, alteration, mineralization, structures, and other features relevant to development and production decisions. 11. Participates in underground workplace examinations, pre-shift planning, and task-level risk assessments applicable to assigned geology work. 12. Must be able to work in a safe manner and adhere to RMGC safety standards. 4. Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills. 5. General understanding of geology and mining operations; interest in learning underground mine development, production, ground control, ventilation, surveying, and mineral processing interfaces. 6. Working knowledge of computers and common word-processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, and geological data-entry software; exposure to GIS, 3D geological modeling, or mine-planning software is an asset. 7. Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management. 8. Ability to work independently when appropriate and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary technical and operations team. 9. Demonstrate strong administrative, organizational and technical writing skills. 10. Currently enrolled in a geology, geological engineering, earth science, or related bachelor’s degree program, with at least two years of university coursework preferred; 0-2 years of geology or mining experience preferred. 11. Must be 18 years old and presently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. 12. Requires valid driver’s license. Must be able and willing to work underground and travel through active mine workings in accordance with site access, training, and escort requirements. Must be able to recognize and promptly report changing ground, water, ventilation, traffic, and equipment hazards encountered during assigned work.
