Underground Geotechnical Engineer Intern

Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Job Summary The position is intended to provide a university student studying geological engineering, mining engineering, civil engineering, geology, or a related field with practical experience in underground mine geotechnical engineering. The intern will assist the geotechnical and technical services teams with routine data collection, ground-control observations, monitoring, analysis, documentation, and special projects while consistently demonstrating Kinross values. Essential Functions 1. Assists geotechnical personnel with underground geotechnical mapping of development headings, including documentation of rock mass conditions, structures, groundwater, overbreak, and installed ground support. 2. Collects field data for rock mass characterization using site procedures and classification systems under the direction of qualified geotechnical personnel. 3. Assists with installation, inspection, data collection, and basic review of underground geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring systems. 4. Supports geotechnical core logging and drilling programs through core orientation checks, recovery and RQD measurements, discontinuity logging, photography, sample handling, and data entry as assigned. 5. Assists with special projects such as ground-support quality control, pull testing support, shotcrete observations and sampling, rehabilitation reviews, overbreak assessments, seismic or convergence data review, and ground-control performance tracking. 6. Maintains accurate field notes, inspection records, photographs, sample records, databases, and other geotechnical documentation in accordance with site standards. 7. Works collaboratively with geotechnical engineering, geology, mine engineering, survey, ventilation, and operations personnel and communicates observations that may affect ground-control performance or worker safety. 8. Participates in underground inspections with qualified personnel and assists with documenting changing ground conditions, damaged support, rehabilitation needs, and follow-up actions. 9. Assists with ground-support design checks, data summaries, calculations, plans, sections, presentations, and technical reports under engineering supervision. 10. Helps organize and analyze monitoring, mapping, quality-control, and incident-related data to identify trends and support engineering reviews. 11. Participates in pre-shift planning, workplace examinations, task-level risk assessments, and other safety processes applicable to assigned work. 12. Must be able to work in a safe manner and adhere to RMGC safety standards. 4. Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills. 5. General understanding of engineering or geological principles and an interest in underground mining, rock mechanics, ground support, structural geology, and mine safety. 6. Working knowledge of computers and common word-processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software; exposure to CAD, GIS, 3D mine software, numerical modeling, or geotechnical data systems is an asset. 7. Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management. 8. Ability to work independently when appropriate and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary technical and operations team. 9. Demonstrates strong organizational, analytical, data-management, and technical writing skills. 10. Currently enrolled in geological engineering, mining engineering, civil engineering, geology, or a related bachelor’s degree program, with at least two years of university coursework preferred; 0-2 years of relevant engineering, geology, construction, or mining experience preferred. 11. Must be 18 years old and presently authorized to work in the United States on a full time basis. 12. Requires valid driver’s license.
