Underground Mine Engineer Intern

Round Mountain is an open-pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company’s portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations. The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area. Job Summary The position is intended to provide a university student studying mining engineering or a related discipline with practical experience in underground mine engineering. The intern will assist the Technical Services team with mine design, ventilation, short- and medium-range mine planning, production support, cycle-time data collection, analysis, and special projects while consistently demonstrating Kinross values. Essential Functions 1. Assists mine engineers with underground development and production designs, including layouts for headings, ramps, accesses, stopes, drill patterns, services, and supporting infrastructure under appropriate supervision. 2. Supports short- and medium-range mine planning by updating designs, quantities, equipment assumptions, activity durations, and schedule inputs using approved planning criteria. 3. Assists ventilation personnel with underground ventilation surveys, including airflow, pressure, temperature, and environmental data collection, and helps maintain ventilation records and plans. 4. Collects underground operating-cycle data for drilling, charging, blasting, re-entry, mucking, hauling, ground support, backfilling, and related activities using approved observation and data-capture methods. 5. Assists with special projects such as haulage studies, equipment productivity reviews, development advance analysis, stope-cycle reviews, infrastructure trade-offs, and ventilation or mine-plan optimization. 6. Compiles, validates, organizes, and summarizes engineering and operational data using spreadsheets, databases, dashboards, mine-planning software, and other approved systems. 7. Works collaboratively with mine engineering, ventilation, geology, geotechnical engineering, survey, operations, maintenance, and other site personnel to complete assigned work and communicate findings. 8. Conducts time-and-motion observations underground and records timestamps, delays, travel distances, equipment interactions, and operating conditions without interfering with production activities. 9. Assists with comparing actual cycle performance against planning assumptions and prepares clear summaries of variances, recurring delays, and potential improvement opportunities for engineering review. 10. Updates mine plans, sections, drawings, quantities, presentations, and planning documentation under the direction of qualified engineering personnel. 11. Participate in underground inspections, planning meetings, pre-shift coordination, workplace examinations, and task-level risk assessments applicable to assigned engineering work. 12. General understanding of mining engineering principles and an interest in underground mine design, scheduling, ventilation, equipment productivity, and production systems. 6. Working knowledge of computers and common word-processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software; exposure to mine-planning, CAD, ventilation-modeling, scheduling, GIS, or data-visualization software is an asset. 7. Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management. 8. Ability to work independently when appropriate and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary technical and operations team. 9. Demonstrates strong analytical, organizational, data-management, problem-solving, and technical writing skills. 10. Currently enrolled in a mining engineering or related bachelor’s degree program, with at least two years of university coursework preferred; 0-2 years of relevant engineering, mining, construction, or industrial experience preferred. 11. Must be 18 years old and presently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. 12. Requires valid driver’s license.
