What "two weeks" actually means
The phrase is so common that most people give it without checking the contract. A few situational notes:
- United States. Employment is at-will in 49 states (Montana excepted). Two weeks is custom, not law. But contracts and offer letters often specify it. Skipping notice can affect your final paycheck for unused PTO in some states.
- United Kingdom. Statutory minimum notice is 1 week if you've worked <2 years; up to 12 weeks for longer tenures. Most contracts override the minimum. Senior roles routinely require 1–3 months.
- European Union. Notice periods vary by country and tenure (Germany scales by years employed; France often requires 1–3 months for cadres). The contract is binding.
- India / Philippines / parts of Asia. 30, 60, or 90 days is typical. Two weeks is exceptional.
Always state the exact last working date in your letter, not "two weeks from today". Eliminates ambiguity if delivery is delayed.
Edge cases worth handling explicitly
- PTO during notice. Some employers refuse PTO use after notice. Confirm in writing what carries over and what gets paid out.
- Stock and RSUs. Vesting cliffs and equity windows often pivot on the last working day. Get a vesting statement before you sign.
- Non-compete. Most US states limit enforceability; some EU jurisdictions require post-employment payments to enforce one. Check before promising specifics about your next employer.
- References. Ask for a written reference (LinkedIn recommendation or PDF) before you walk out. Promised references after the fact often don't materialise.
