Main Purpose and Function This position focuses on support for Capital Plan project delivery including but not limited to new and renewed outdoor sport field facilities, new parks, dog off leash areas, small plazas, and park and playground renewal programs. The Landscape Designer responsibilities include preparation of public engagement material, conceptual plans, detailed designed, graphic representations and preliminary cost estimates for Park Development projects. The Landscape Designer works with senior staff to help prepare requests for proposals and tender documents to retain professional consultants and contractors for Park Development projects. The position is expected to independently inspect and document work of contractors, record meeting minutes, review contractor submittals, and report updates and recommendations for approval to senior staff. Specific Duties and Responsibilities Prepares preliminary overall site design concepts for new park development projects or renovations to existing park areas. Consults with other civic personnel and community groups on matters pertaining to assigned projects. Prepares graphic presentations, plans and models as required. Prepares detailed landscape design drawings for overall site development, including specifications for grading, site layout, planting and drainage patterns. Makes recommendations on horticultural materials required and prepares specifications for such materials. Prepares preliminary cost estimates for grading, seeding, plant material and landscape treatment. Reviews existing landscaped areas and recommends on revised landscape design where necessary. Makes recommendations on park equipment, fixtures and furniture and their placement on landscaped areas. Assists the Landscape Architect, Senior Project Manager or their designate on project inspections and scheduling and reports on discrepancies. Qualifications Education and Experience: Graduation from an Institute of Technology in Landscape Construction, Landscape Horticulture or a related discipline plus sound related experience, or University graduation in Landscape Architecture plus some related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of landscape design principles, methods and practices. Sound knowledge of landscape architectural principles and practices. Sound knowledge of ornamental horticultural practices. Good knowledge of landscape construction methods and materials. Ability to perform design drafting assignments including graphic renderings. Ability to estimate time and material requirements and costs and prepare specifications covering design work. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, contractors and other employees. Ability to use computer aided drafting techniques and computer graphics software applications and equipment. Drivers License and Record Checks Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
