Would you like to be part of a vibrant local government organization that is embarking on a number of exciting housing initiatives and deals with a wide variety of development applications? Are you looking for an exciting position where you’ll be exposed to a wide range of contemporary planning issues? The City of Delta’s Development Department is looking for an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Planning Technician 1 to work within the Development Planning Division. This is a temporary full-time role with an anticipated duration of approximately 12 months. Reporting to the Manager of Development Planning or Manager of Priority Projects, the Planning Technician 1 will review and process a variety of minor land use applications including subdivisions, minor rezonings, land use permits and sign permits; prepare plans, maps and other visual communications and graphics material to support planning reports and projects; and respond to public enquiries related to zoning, land use and related matters. The Planning Technician 1 may also conduct research and data analysis, draft reports and memos, and perform other related work to support the department’s planning work. The ideal candidate will be an organized team player, critical thinker, self-starter, and strong communicator who can represent the department in a professional manner. A successful candidate should have: A Bachelors Degree, preferably in Planning or supplemented by post-secondary courses in architecture, civil engineering, geography, planning, public administration or related disciplines. Courses or training related to geographic information systems or visual communications would also be considered an asset. Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, and methods applicable to land use planning and policy development. Experience coordinating building and development projects and applications in a local government context. Experience reviewing and understanding technical documents such as drawings, plans, technical studies and reports. Strong communication skills with experience communicating or engaging with the public, and the ability to explain technical concepts to the public or stakeholders. Knowledge of applicable regulations, policies, bylaws, and legislation applicable to land use planning and development in BC and the City of Delta. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts. Several years of experience providing exceptional customer service. Work portfolio will be assigned based on both incumbent's skill set and departmental needs. Membership or eligibility for membership in the Planning Institute of BC and the Canadian Institute of Planners is preferred. This position requires a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
