He angitūtanga: The opportunity Auckland Council's Technology Services team is looking for a Software Asset Management Analyst to join our Software Asset & Capacity Management team. This role suits someone with a strong software licensing background, particularly in Microsoft and other major software vendors. You'll enjoy turning complex license terms and usage data into clear, commercially sound decisions. You'll help manage Auckland Council's software assets across their lifecycle so that our software environment is well governed, compliant, cost-effective, and aligned with organisational needs. You'll work with key stakeholders such as Technology Services, Finance, Procurement, Legal and our vendors. Using your licensing expertise, commercial thinking, and data analysis, you'll improve licensing outcomes, manage risk and find opportunities to optimise cost. You'll also be closely involved in renewals, vendor negotiations, procurement, and budget planning. That gives you the chance to develop a broad commercial skillset alongside your licensing and Software Asset Management expertise. Ngā kawenga matua: Key responsibilities You will: Interpret and apply licensing terms, product terms and use rights for Microsoft and other key enterprise vendors, and give the business clear licensing advice Analyse usage, entitlement and financial data to right-size licensing, reclaim unused licenses and identify savings Support renewals, true-ups and new agreements, including reviewing license metrics, terms and pricing Manage software assets across their lifecycle, from request and acquisition through to renewal and retirement Support the fulfilment of software requests through our Service Management platform Maintain accurate records of entitlements, proof of entitlement, inventory, and usage Monitor license compliance and identify and manage the associated risks Prepare for and support internal and external software license audits Support software budgeting, forecasting, and business cases Operate and maintain our SAM tools, and identify integration and automation opportunities Develop and continuously improve SAM policies, processes, and procedures Provide clear reporting and insights that support informed decision-making Build strong working relationships across Technology Services, Finance, Procurement, Legal and our suppliers He kōrero mōu: About you You'll bring practical experience in Software Asset Management, IT Asset Management or a closely related role, with a solid track record in software licensing. You're comfortable reading and interpreting licensing documentation and working across commercial, technical and operational considerations. You'll also bring: Strong, hands-on Microsoft licensing knowledge across Microsoft 365, cloud, and on-premises products, including how Microsoft agreements, licensing guides, and Product Terms apply in practice Licensing experience with other major enterprise vendors, such as Adobe, SAP, Salesforce, Esri, ServiceNow, or others A sound understanding of licensing models (user, device, core, subscription and consumption-based), compliance and software lifecycle management Experience with SAM, IT Service Management, or related technology platforms Strong analytical skills, including advanced Excel and confidence working with complex datasets Commercial acumen and experience supporting software contracts, renewals, procurement, approval processes, and vendor negotiations An understanding of software audit processes and risk management Strong stakeholder management skills and the confidence to work across technology, finance, procurement, legal and other stakeholder teams across the business Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain licensing in plain and simple terms A proactive and team-focused approach, with the ability to manage competing priorities and work well under pressure A relevant tertiary qualification in Information Technology is preferred, or equivalent practical experience. Certifications such as CSAM, CITAM or ITIL are an advantage, as is formal Microsoft or other vendor licensing training.
